Julia Reda and the European Parliament

Since her election to the European Parliament in 2014 as the only representative of the German Pirate Party, the 30-year-old MEP has made weakening copyright protections her single-issue crusade... Reda has accepted that the final version of the legislation winding its way through the Brussels will fall short of her ideals. But as a European Commission proposal moves through the European Parliament, she’s holding out hope of pushing through at least a few of her key changes... Already, she has helped push through important concessions in the proposed legislation, such as allowing scientists…

"On March 15, The Netherlands will hold their Lower House elections.  With the deadline drawing closer, aspiring political parties are scrambling to ensure they make it on the voter’s ballots. California Pirate Party Meeting, Jan 30th, 2017

[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijh16GKAR5Y[/embed] Officer’s Report: @orion discussed two methods to achieving voter recognition in the State of California: A. voter registration, which requires 1% of the population of CA (~100,000) to register as a Pirate, or B: petition, which requires 10% of the voters in the last gubernatorial election (~750,000) to petition for the existence of the California Pirate Party. Are Pirate Parties relevant to Europe?

In the 2016 parliamentary elections in Iceland, the Pirate Party celebrated its largest ever electoral success, winning 14.5 percent of the popular vote and securing 10 of the 63 seats in the Althing. While the Icelandic Pirate Party is now considered the most successful Pirate Party in Europe, the result could have turned out even better. In April 2016, amidst the height of the Panama Papers scandal that saw Prime Minister Sigmundur Gunnlaugsson resign from office, several opinion polls projected that the Pirates could capture as much as 43% of the popular vote. With both…

Iceland gets new govt, could restart EU talks

"In the Oct. 29 election, the radical Pirate Party, which calls for direct democracy and digital freedom, tripled its vote and won 10 parliamentary seats. But many Icelanders also voted for continuity, in the form of Benediktsson's Independents, who had formed part of the previous coalition government. Since election day there have been three failed attempts to form coalitions, including one led by the Pirates." Read the full article from the AP here.
